چکیده

Statistical methods for quantifying the population impact of exposure factors by means of estimating some variant of the attributable risk parameter for a binary disease variable based on stratification methods or multivariable models have been extensively developed during the last decade. In epidemiologic studies, these risk parameters enjoy growing popularityas they allow a practice-oriented interpretation for public health purposes. Despite this demand by epidemiologic researchers, none of the leading statistical software packages including SASTM has incorporated any attributable risk parameter in the catalogue of measures of association to be automatically calculated in some procedure. In the paper, an introduction to the theory and application of attributable risk estimation from epidemiologic data is provided. Then, a general method and its corresponding practical realization are described how to calculate different attributable risk estimators using the SAS software. Data from the German GRIPS-study, a cohort study on cardiovascular risk factors for myocardial infarction, are used to illustrate the methodologic concept and its computational realization.

Background: Hypertension is one of the most important chronic illness worldwide and one the major risk factors for cardiovascular diseases. Obesity and abdominal obesity are risk factors for high blood pressure. Population attributable fraction (PAF) answers the question of how much of the disease burden in a certain population may be reduced if a risk factor like obesity is removed from the po...

Comprehensive Computational Analysis of Protein Phenotype Changes Due to Plausible Deleterious Variants of Human SPTLC1 Gene

Genetic variations found in the coding and non-coding regions of a gene are known to influence the structure as well as the function of proteins. Serine palmitoyltransferase long chain subunit 1 a member of α-oxoamine synthase family is encoded by SPTLC1 gene which is a subunit of enzyme serine palmitoyltransferase (SPT). Mutations in SPTLC1 have been associated with hereditary sensory and auto...

Risk factors for C-section delivery and population attributable risk for C-section risk factors in Southwest of Iran: a prospective cohort study

Background: Iran has a high C-section rate (40.6% in 2005). The objective of this study was to assess the associations and population-attributable risks (PAR) of risk factors combinations and C-section in the Southwest Iran. Methods: We performed a population-based cohort study using the reports provided by Shiraz University of Medical Sciences. The cohort included pregnant women within Sept...
